Dr. Hassan S. Bazzi is the associate dean for external affairs, head of the division of science, and professor of chemistry at Hamad Bin Khalifa University. He is also adjunct professor of chemistry at Texas A&M University at Qatar, a branch campus of Texas A&M University. During his 20+ years at Texas A&M, he helped establish and manage the Qatar campus, under the auspices of the Qatar Foundation. He is the longest-serving faculty administrator at Texas A&M at Qatar, maintaining continuous tenure in leadership roles between 2006 and 2024. Over the years, he assumed diverse administrative roles, ranging from chair of academic programs to various assistant/associate/senior associate dean positions. He possesses substantial expertise in leading and overseeing higher education institutions in an international setting.

During his administrative leadership roles, Dr. Bazzi oversaw the office of research, research computing, development, alumni affairs, industry collaborations, quality assurance, technical services, academic outreach, and continuing education. At Texas A&M, he was the senior associate dean for advancement and industry engagement (07/2023 to 07/2024), the senior associate dean for research and advancement (09/2021 to 06/2023), the associate dean for research and advancement (03/2017 to 08/2021), the interim chair of the science program (09/2019 to 08/2020), the assistant dean for research (09/2014 to 02/2017), and the interim chair of the Petroleum Engineering Program (09/2014 to 09/2015). Before that, he was the founding chair of the Science Program from 09/2006 to 08/2014 where he oversaw the growth and expansion of the chemistry, physics, and mathematics programs. He is the recipient of the Dean’s Leadership Award in 2018 for his administrative leadership; the Dean’s Achievement Award in 2014 for outstanding service; the Dean’s Leadership Award in 2012 for his performance as chair of the Science Program; and the Faculty Excellence Award in 2011 for excellence in teaching, research, and service. He also holds the Shield of H.E. President Emile Lahoud of Lebanon (2003) for his work with the United Nations.

Dr. Bazzi received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry and organic chemistry, respectively, from the American University of Beirut (1996 and 1998), and his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry with Dean’s Honor List from McGill University (2003). He worked briefly with the United Nations as a chemical weapons inspector in Iraq before doing a postdoctoral research fellowship at Université de Montréal. He joined Texas A&M at Qatar as assistant professor in 2004, was promoted to associate professor (2009), and then to full professor (2014). Dr. Bazzi completed the Management Development Program (June 2014) and the Institute for Management and Leadership in Education (June 2018) at Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Bazzi established and built the Science Program at Texas A&M at Qatar. He managed the setup of the freshman chemistry and physics teaching labs, as well as the research and instrumentation labs. Dr. Bazzi regularly teaches courses in general and polymer chemistry. Dr. Bazzi’s research interests focus on metathesis chemistry as a powerful tool in small molecule and polymer synthesis, in addition to polymer-supported catalysis, DNA-mimetic polymers, and fluorous analogs of ruthenium-based catalysts. He has been very successful in securing external research funding, with approximately $15 million in total support for his projects. His group has reported novel polymer supported metathesis catalysts that can be recycled and recovered. He is co-author of three U.S. patents (one of them is the first patent application from Texas A&M at Qatar), and five patent applications. He has been the author and co-author on more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 150 conference presentations.

Dr. Bazzi regularly chairs and organizes internationally recognized chemistry conferences. He organized and chaired the first-ever American Chemical Society conference in the MENA and GCC regions in Qatar in March 2022. He also chaired the first-ever IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) conference in Qatar in January 2012. In 2007, he inaugurated the first chemistry conference series at Texas A&M at Qatar and in the state of Qatar. In addition, he also helped organize two math conferences, and a series of Texas A&M at Qatar colloquium lectures. He raised more than $2.8 million since 2007. He was instrumental in creating and funding the first two chair positions and one professorship at Texas A&M at Qatar: the QAPCO Chair of Polymer Science and Engineering and the QAFCO Chair of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering. He recruited Dr. Robert H. Grubbs, Nobel laureate in chemistry 2005, as an adjunct professor and the first Nobel laureate with an academic affiliation in Qatar. Dr. Bazzi oversaw all the STEM activities, and he established the first STEM Road Show in Qatar (launched 11/2017) that brings exciting learning experiences to Qatar’s schools. He founded the Qatar chapter of the American Chemical Society in 2018 and chaired it until 2022.

Dr. Bazzi is a fellow of the American Chemical Society, fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, member of the American Society for Engineering Education, member of the Canadian Society of Chemistry, and executive member of the Syndicate of Chemists in Lebanon. He is also the international representative of the Royal Society of Chemistry in Qatar. He serves as a member of the International Activities Committee of the American Chemical Society, and of the Qatar Academy for Science and Technology Advisory Board
