Supplemental Instruction

Are you struggling to understand challenging course concepts? Could you benefit from studying in an interactive environment? Do you want to increase your chances of earning a better grade? Then join an SI session today!

Supplemental Instruction (SI) supports difficult or challenging courses. SI focuses not only on what to learn but how to learn. The sessions are offered outside of class two or three times a week on a regular schedule.

SI sessions can help you:

  • Develop study skills
  • Identify appropriate study strategies
  • Solve practice problems
  • Think critically about course content in an interactive environment
  • Take notes and prepare efficiently for tests

The collaborative learning experiences in SI sessions allow you to develop relationships with other students, further expanding your support network.

What to expect

  • Attendance is voluntary.
  • SI sessions are NOT restricted to those experiencing difficulties in class.
  • Sessions are free.
  • SI can help you better understand the course content and earn higher grades.
  • SI sessions are NOT a substitute for class lectures, nor do they introduce new course material.

How can I join an SI session?

SI is open to ALL students enrolled in the supported course and does NOT require prior booking. Attendance is confidential, and professors are not provided with attendees' names. Typically, your SI leader will reach out to students in supported courses. They will set timings for SI sessions and share the timing, location, or zoom links with you.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders

SI leaders are undergraduate students who have successfully completed the course at Tamuq. They are trained to facilitate interactive group sessions where students can meet to improve their critical thinking, develop various learning strategies, and prepare for their exams. They utilize collaborative activities to ensure peer-to-peer interaction in small groups.

Leaders attend all class lectures, take notes, and act as model students.

They plan for the activities to be facilitated based on the course content.SI leaders don't lecture! They help you think about the lecture you attended, the notes you took, and the material you read! They allow you to study efficiently by conducting review sessions of each week's material. Attendance is voluntary; however, joining the sessions can significantly improve your academic performance.
