University students win top honors

Former student Mariam Al-Meer and current student, Maryam Abdulla, were recently honored during a celebration to recognize education excellence. Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, heir apparent and chairman of the Supreme Education Council, the event honored top students of secondary schools, university graduates, distinguished teachers and outstanding schools. Al-Meer received the University Graduate Platinum Award for her time at Texas A&M at Qatar. Abdulla was awarded an Outstanding Student Award for her time at Al Bayan Independent Secondary School.

Five students in the Chemical Engineering Program have been honored with awards for their outstanding academic records and their contribution to the program and research. Recipients of awards and accolades are Deema Saeed, Muaz Selam, Moiz Bohra, Yahia Abo Al Naga and Asma Sadia.

Texas A&M University was awarded first and fifth place to students at the conclusion of Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) fifth annual Undergraduate Research Experience Program (UREP) competition. The first place winning project, “Investigating the Effects of Ultra High Pressures and Temperatures on the Rheological Properties of Oil-Based Drilling Mud” was completed by students Abdulaziz Al-Mohannadi, Mohammad Abu Ghazaleh, Mohammed Al-Jubouri, Abdullah Taha, Radhwan Alsaad, Mohammed Fakhroo, Mohammed Hanbal and Mustafa Al-Waily under the mentorship of Dr. Mahmoud Amani, associate professor of petroleum engineering. The fifth place winning project, “An investigation into specific skills requiring enhancement in Qatari high school students to succeed in an engineering education” completed by students Huda Al-Qahtani, Souad Aqeel, Hind Barnieh, Asma Gouba, Dawood Hjeij, Mohamed Salem and Mohamed Zourob under the mentorship of Dr. Beena Ahmed, lecturer of electrical engineering, and Dr. Ghada Salama, lecturer of chemical engineering. Winners were chosen from the best five projects from a total of 88 projects completed in 2012 after a thorough two-stage screening process.

The senior chemical engineering class together, along with nine seniors College Station visited QAFCO facilities in Messaeid on 14 March. Dr. John Baldwin, senior lecturer of chemical engineering at Texas A&M University, Dr. Ioannis Economou, professor of chemical engineering, Dr. Konstantinos Kakosimos, assistant professor of chemical engineering, and Raid Hassiba, technical laboratory coordinator, accompanied the team. QAFCO engineers presented a short introduction to the facilities, followed by a tour to the ammonia and urea plants.

Mary Katebah, Dema Almasri, Rym Kanes and Hania Albatrni, under the leadership of Dr. Ghada Salama, lecturer of chemical engineering, recently won Best Poster during the inaugural World Congress on Engineering Education. The poster titled, “Developing Engineering Projects for Female High School Students,” focused on the team’s yearlong research from a local Qatari female high school. The project was funded by Undergraduate Research Experience Program (UREP) as part of Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF).

Five Texas A&M at Qatar students, on 26-29 Oct., will attend the annual student American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) conference in Pittsburgh, Pa. Students, led by Yahia Abo Al Naga, will be participating in the Chem-E-Car competition, where teams design and build a shoe box-sized car solely powered by chemical reactions. The team’s activities are funded in part by BP UK in collaboration with the University.

Students win poster competition at gas processing symposium
Five Texas A&M at Qatar undergraduate students won first place in the poster competition of the 3rd International Gas Processing Symposium organized by the Qatar University Gas Processing Center from 5 – 7 March 2012. Jahanur Rahman, Dhabia Al-Mohannadi, Haider Ramadhan, Maria Orillano and Mariam Al-Meer were awarded the prize for their project titled "A path to formulate new generations of synthetic jet fuels derived from natural gas via GTL." The research, sponsored by Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), includes experimental work in addition to statistical and mathematical modeling activities. The students will present their work at the American Chemical Society's 2012 National Spring Meeting in San Diego, CA, US, from 24 – 29 March.
