Students

Texas A&M University at Qatar has more than 20 student organizations. Recognized ECEN student organizations include IEEE Student Chapter and the Lambda Mu Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), the Electrical Engineering Honor Society.

ECEN Program Student Board

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Program Students Board is constituted of a mix of elected IEEE officers and selected students by the faculty. The students on the board act as a "bridge" between the students and the faculty members by meeting some of them on a regular basis to discuss issues related to teaching, laboratories, and course scheduling. The student board members coordinate with the IEEE Student Chapter some tutoring activities among students. The student representatives in the board are senior, junior and sophomores.

IEEE Student Chapter

IEEE, a non-profit organization, is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. IEEE was originally an acronym for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Incorporated. Since the organization's scope of interest has expanded into numerous related fields, IEEE is now referred to by the acronym alone.

The Texas A&M at Qatar Student Chapter of IEEE was established to provide electrical engineering students the opportunity to become familiar with the processes of a professional organization and reap the benefits of membership in the international association. The IEEE campus chapter helps develop the students' sense of responsibility, communication skills, ethics and professional knowledge. In order to become a member of the Texas A&M at Qatar chapter, a student must register as a student member with IEEE. Student IEEE membership benefits include the opportunity to participate in IEEE conferences and a subscription to Spectrum Magazine.

The university's student chapter has organized various events since its inception. For example, during Fall 2007, three students participated in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) IEEE Conference held in Bahrain. A paper competition was also organized.

HKN Honor Society

The Lambda Mu Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), the Electrical Engineering Honor Society at Texas A&M University at Qatar, was installed on 2 May 2012. On the same day, 19 electrical engineering students at Texas A&M at Qatar were initiated at the campus’s first initiation ceremony. Eta Kappa Nu was founded on 28 October 1904 at the University of Illinois (USA). On 1 September 2010, IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu Association merged to form IEEE-HKN. Currently, IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu comprises about 200 university chapters, many active member volunteers, and thousands of student members. More information about the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society can be found at: www.hkn.org
