Liberal Arts lecture to focus on Arikara language

Published Apr 24, 2013

Loren Yellow Bird, member of the Sahnish (Arikara) nation, traditional Arikara singer, historian and American Indian cultural interpreter at Fort Union Trading Post National Park, North Dakota, presented, "Bringing the Old Ways Back to Life: Arikara Language and Cultural Revival by Members of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, North Dakota," on 24 April. The lecture focused on Arikara culture change in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the stresses of assimilation experienced by the tribe that resulted from a near total loss of language, history and cultural practice, and the processes of cultural recovery and revitalization.
