Work by Grubbs and University researcher published in chemistry journal
Published Jun 26, 2013Dr. Robert Grubbs, QAPCO Chair in Polymer Science and Engineering, the Victor and Elizabeth Atkins Professor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology and 2005 Nobel laureate in chemistry, was recently published in Polymer Chemistry. Co-authored by Dr. Robert Tuba, assistant research scientist at Texas A&M at Qatar, the article focused on developing sustainable polymerization processes that will allow for the production of environmentally friendly synthetic rubber from cyclopentene and their derivatives. Those are side products of several petrochemical technologies operating in Qatar. The main feature of the tested ruthenium catalyst systems are that they do not require co-catalyst or activators and are known to be relatively stable in ROMP reaction, making these polymerization reactions suitable for industrial application.
