Khraisheh named mechanical engineering chair

TAMUQ-2020-MEEN-chair-KhraishehDr. Marwan Khraisheh will join the Texas A&M at Qatar faculty in April as the new chair of the Mechanical Engineering Program, succeeding Dr. Ibrahim Hassan who has led the program since September 2019.

Khraisheh  has extensive academic and research leadership experience. He is currently the senior planning and research director at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, overseeing a number of portfolios spanning research, innovation and digital learning. He joined Qatar Foundation in 2014 and led QF’s Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) with a research staff of more than 150 to address energy, water and environment grand challenges. Khraisheh was the Acting Provost and Founding Dean of Masdar Institute (in partnership with MIT) and a member of the MIT-Masdar Joint Executive Committee. At Masdar Institute, he led the development of eight M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs, and recruited more than 70 faculty members from around the world. Prior to joining Masdar Institute in 2008, Khraisheh was the Secat – Morris Professor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kentucky.

Khraisheh’s research focuses on integrating mechanics and materials to develop novel concepts and technologies in smart and sustainable manufacturing for various applications including transportation and mobility, energy, water treatment (membranes and advanced composites), and biomedical (implants and devices).

He is a recipient of the U.S. National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the Eugene Merchant Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), the Outstanding Research Paper Award from the North American Manufacturing Research Institute (NAMRI) and the Henry Mason Lutes Award for Excellence in Engineering Education. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP).

He served as Associate Technical Editor for ASME Transactions Journal of Engineering Materials and Technologyand served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Materials Processing Technology (Elsevier). He currently serves as Associate Editor of Energy Transitions Journal (Springer).
