Elbashir to give Al Maerifa lecture on industry and academia collaborations in Qatar’s gas industry

Published Oct 25, 2020

Dr. Nimir Elbashir, joint professor in the Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering Programs, will give the next virtual lecture in the Al Maerifa Public Seminar Series on 29 October from 12 to 1 p.m.

Elbashir’s talk, “Industry-Academia Collaboration in Advancing Qatar’s Gas Processing Research,” will focus on existing success stories in building bridges between academia and industry. Past collaborations between the two have included understanding natural gas conversion, creating world-class research capabilities, exploring new avenues to diversify products from natural gas, and more. These collaborations have resulted in several synergistic outcomes that lead to technological inventions, product development, and the training of global leaders in science and engineering.

Dr. Elbashir’s extensive research activities focus on the design of advanced reactors, catalysts and conversion processes for natural gas, coal and CO2 to ultra-clean fuels and value added chemicals. He has established several unique global research collaboration models between academia and industry with research funds exceeding $12 million in the last six years. He holds several U.S. and European patents and a large number of scientific publications. Elbashir currently serves as the Chair of the Petroleum Engineering Program, the Director of the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station Gas and Fuels Research Center — a major research center that involves faculty members from the Qatar and College Station campuses of Texas A&M University — and the Chair of the ORYX GTL Gas-to-Liquid Technology Excellence Program. Elbashir is also the recipient of Qatar Foundation’s "Distinguished Inventor of the Year 2020" for his contributions and patentable subject matter.

The Al Maerifa virtual seminar series features 45-minute seminars to promote knowledge on topics centered around Qatar’s grand challenges and research pursuits. The talks are presented in English and are designed for a general, nontechnical audience. Participants will be invited to ask questions at the end of the presentation.

Upcoming Al Maerifa Seminars include Mr. Abdulaziz Bin Nasser Al-Khalifa, CEO of Qatar Development Bank, on 12 November and Mr. Yasser Al Jaidah, CEO of QatarCool, on 19 November, 2020.
