Chemical engineering undergraduates Ghalya Abdulla and Noora Alsubaiei won first place in the poster competition at the recent international New Trends in Science and Applications conference for their poster, "Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation from Seawater using High Performance Polymeric Materials."

Abdulla and Alsubaiei presented their research on conjugated polymers for photocatalytic hydrogen generation. The pair are investigating the performance of nanoparticles to split water using available water sources to generate hydrogen for use as an energy source. This process will be assessed using sunlight-driven unassisted photo-splitting of water in a photocatalytic solar simulator.

The students are working under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Al-Hashimi, Dr. Konstantinos Kakosimos and industry mentor Dr. Dhruv Arora from Qatar Shell on an Undergraduate Research Project (UREP) funded by the Qatar National Research Fund and Shell.
