Texas A&M at Qatar alum wins first place in SPE Middle East and North Africa Region student paper contest

Published Jul 05, 2022

A former student of Texas A&M at Qatar, Afsha Shaikh ’22 has won first place in the student paper contest organized by Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Middle East and North Africa Region.

Her paper on “Study on The Enhancement of Completion Fluids Corrosion Properties In Petroleum Production System” also won her first place at TAMUQ’s SPE paper contest. The project Shaikh presented was the result of an Undergraduate Research Experience Program funded by the Qatar National Research Fund. This research project helps to determine corrosion rates of different completion fluids used in production systems along with the addition of corrosion inhibitors under high temperature conditions for deeper wells.

Shaikh said, "I am grateful that my faculty mentor, Dr. Albertus Retnanto encouraged me to submit my abstract for the SPE MENA student paper contest. I was a freshman when I was introduced to research projects and working with professors for UREP and URS. Since then, I have been interested in studying more about conventional drilling fluids and its properties as well as corrosion conditions in the production system. I'm proud to have been mentored by Dr. Albertus who has guided me through every step with valuable feedback. As an Aggie, I aspire to bring laurels to our Petroleum Engineering Department and Texas A&M at Qatar."

She will now represent Texas A&M at Qatar in the international student competition which will be held in October 2022.
