A team of electrical and computer engineering students from Texas A&M University at Qatar, a Qatar Foundation partner university, has won the award for the Best Energy Efficiency project at the 10th anniversary celebration of the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed).

Texas A&M Qatar students Saoud Al-Muhannadi, Abdulla Al-Haddad and Mohammed Al-Mahmoud, presented their capstone project, “Smart Energy Monitoring System Based on IoT,” and received the Best Energy Efficiency Project Award. Dr. Hussein Alnuweiri and Dr. Shady Khalil were team mentors. Dr. Haitham Abu-Rub received the award on behalf of the Texas A&M Qatar team.

The students showcased a device that allows the users to manage energy consumption in home appliances and determine how much energy is consumed for these home appliances. This data is stored on the cloud and can be accessed by users at all times from anywhere in the world. The advanced technology implemented in this project allows users to save energy consumed by home appliances.

The event was organized by the Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), under the patronage of the His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. The Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani and other high-ranking dignitaries and officials attended the event.
