Texas A&M at Qatar representatives participate in Women in Leadership conference

A number of representatives from Texas A&M at Qatar participated in the Women in Leadership conference that was held recently. The three-day conference focused on equipping women for leadership in higher education. 

The event was hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), in coordination with Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q), HEC Paris in Qatar and Qatar Financial Centre.

Dr. Cesar Malavé, Dean, Texas A&M University at Qatar gave the welcome address to kick off the conversations with leaders in academia and industry provided inspiration for improving female retention and recruitment for both STEM and STEAM. The Women’s Faculty Forum at Texas A&M at Qatar hosted Session II: Leaders in our Disciplines, STEM and STEAM, moderated by Dr. Naqaa Abbas, Division of Arts & Sciences and Dr. Dhabia Al-Mohannadi, Chemical Engineering Program. Perspectives on addressing gender challenges were shared by Dr. Brittany Bounds, Instructional Assistant Professor in the Division of Arts & Sciences and former WFF Co-Chair, Dr. Summer Bateiha, Associate Professor of Mathematics in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Program at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar.

Texas A&M at Qatar alumnus, Abeer Abulhuleiqa, Reserves Engineer with Petroleum Resource Management team under Qatar Energy/Reservoir Engineer and Founder and Vice Chairperson of QWEA, was a plenary speaker and her presentation was on ‘Preparing females to enter the engineering workforce in Qatar: perspectives, accomplishments and challenges.

Dr. Ghada Salama, the Dean’s Fellow for Diversity and ADVANCE Administrative Fellow at TAMUQ, shared her perspectives on the gender gap in academia on the Leadership Majlis Panel at CMU-Q.

Abulhuleiqa; Dr. Valentini Pappa, Manager of Graduate Studies at Texas A&M at Qatar and Ms. Rahaf Homssi, Texas A&M at Qatar mechanical engineering graduating senior and Society of Women Engineers (SWE) student chapter president also participated in a panel discussion on ‘Becoming Leaders in our Disciplines: The Road Ahead’.

Other presenters included prominent women from industry and academia including Amal Al-Malki, Founding Dean for College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and Dr. Hanan Alshareef Farhat, Senior Research Director, Qatar Environment & Energy Institute (QEERI)

Blue Salon, HUB Business Center, and Lusail Water Factory supported the event.
