Texas A&M University at Qatar students, Haya Haji and Reem Haji, won first place for the poster competition at the “Second International Conference on Chemicals & Materials for Emergent Technologies: Sustainability Development Goals EDITION - 2022” organized by Qatar University. The chemical engineering seniors were supervised by Dr. Mohammed Al-Hashimi.

Their poster was on the topic, ‘Thermochromic wristband for monitoring the local temperature.” This project will enable petrochemical companies to enhance safety of their workers by giving them an efficient way to quickly understand the changes in environmental temperature.

The sisters said, “As Qatari students studying chemical engineering at Texas A&M University, we are eager to use the knowledge and skills we have acquired to create and advance ourselves in order to better our beloved nation of Qatar. The quote from His Highness Sheikh Tamim, "Qatar deserves the finest," is something we constantly keep in mind, and that is why we worked on this innovative sensor technology that can contribute to enhancing safety at outdoor workspaces.”

The duo worked closely with Dr. Al-Hashimi on the project, and ensured that they developed an easy to comprehend well-organized visual representation for the poster competition.

Dr. Al-Hashimi said, “I am very proud of both Haya and Reem’s achievements. Their ability to work independently, think innovatively and creatively, with great enthusiasm makes them true Aggie role models. They both have mastered the polymer chemistry aspects and have gone beyond the requirements in the quantity and quality of this project, putting in a lot of extra research and effort every week. They truly deserve the 1st place award for their presentation and research at the conference.”

Earlier, the students were also shortlisted in the top 10 to attend the 2nd Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals Association (GPCA) Innovation Competition that was held in September in Dubai, UAE.
