Texas A&M at Qatar affiliated Ph.D. student Adnan Khan won third place in the Best Representative Image of an Outcome (BRIO) competition for his work on Methane Reformer Microstructure. BRIO was organized by Qatar National Research Fund, a division of the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council, as part of its 15th Annual Undergraduate Research Experience Program (UREP) Competition.

The image is a scanning electron micrograph of a stainless-steel specimen utilized in a steam methane reformer at very high temperatures of 950ºC. The image depicts different precipitates that reinforce the steel matrix to provide it with necessary strength during high temperature service.

“Securing the safe, reliable and efficient operation of steam methane reformers benefits local Qatari industries and shows commitment to powering Qatar's growth and sustainability,” Khan said. “These assets, among the most resource-intensive, play a pivotal role in ensuring Qatar's prosperity and energy security.”

Khan is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Texas A&M University (USA) and is gaining research experience at Texas A&M at Qatar under the supervision of Dr. Bilal Mansoor.
