Liberal Arts initiative helps freshmen find Common Ground

Published Nov 02, 2009

Texas A&M at Qatar's Liberal Arts Program Common Ground initiative continues this year with Booker T. Washington's book "Up from Slavery" and will offer a three-part lecture series. As part of activities planned for all freshman classes, the initiative also sponsored an essay contest based around one theme from the book.

Student judges awarded first place to Ernesto Nuguid, electrical engineering major, second place to Aravindh Rajan, mechanical engineering major, and third place to Maaz Ali, petroleum engineering major. The lecture series is designed to support English 104 students who have read the Common Ground selection. Featured speakers of the lecture series are Dr. Troy Bickham, associate professor of history and Ray A. Rothrock Fellow in the College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Todd Kent, senior assistant professor of political science, and Thomas Nester, history lecturer.
