The two-day event is designed to enrich participants with topics such as best practices, safety success stories, incident case studies, new legislative initiatives and recent advances in process safety research.

The symposium also provides excellent networking opportunities for delegates from industry, regulatory institutions and academia.

Dr Kenneth Hall, associate dean for Research and Graduate Studies at TAMUQ, said: “Process safety is a primary concern for the major industries here in Qatar, and thanks to ConocoPhillips’ support and commitment, this symposium offers an opportunity for industrial professionals and university researchers to share concerns and solutions to address the industry’s process safety issues.”

This year’s symposium has attracted over 250 participants from Qatar and abroad and features more than 30 speakers presenting a range of topics on process safety.

Gary Sykes, president of ConocoPhillips Qatar, said: “In our ongoing commitment to safety, ConocoPhillips introduced eight life-saving rules worldwide. The ConocoPhillips Qatar Business Unit also recently achieved seven years of zero recordable injuries, incidents and illness. This record is a significant milestone accomplishment.”

Hamad Rashid al-Mohannadi, RasGas CEO, delivered the welcome address on behalf of HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry. He said: “Today, health and safety have become the main components of every workplace in every industry, particularly in the energy industry. In Qatar, the energy sector is at the heart of the country’s development.”

At the award ceremony, Hussain al-Baloshi, head of Reliability, Operations Engineering Department Offshore Fields, Qatar Petroleum received the QPSS 2014 Process Safety Excellence Award for his exceptional contribution to process safety in Qatar.
