1. Introduction
3D printing industry is growing at fierce rate and is going to change the way we are living and working. 3D Printing services are playing a very important role in creating new business and new business opportunities. It was with this understanding that Texas A&M University at Qatar established its unique 3D printing facilities in August 2007. This 3Dprinting facility allows students, designers, researchers, and engineers to step beyond the virtual barriers and interact with the real world objects.  
 
2. Eligibility and Requirements
 
3DPC14 is open to all faculty, researchers, postdocs and students who are affiliated to Education City, institutions in Qatar or GCC countries. Local industry members are encouraged to participate as well. The following conditions must apply:
  • The team size should not exceed two project investigators and no more than two students can be involved in the same project.
  • The proposal should not have an intellectual property limitation, as public presentations will be required.
  • The 3D Printing Competition entry must be an .STL and max. 4 images.
  • The description should briefly describe why you have chosen for that specific product and design.
  • The overall size of the 3D Printing Competition model must be no larger than 10" x 10" x 10" (254 x 254 x 254 mm), the minimum wall thickness is 2 mm, and the maximum wall thickness is 5 mm.
  • Tag your model to "Texas A&M University at Qatar"
 
3. Rules
 
  • Registration is free and applicants must accept the underlying conditions.
  • Any entry that does not include an .STL file, will be considered ineligible for the contest.
  • Any entry that is not correct and not printable will be considered ineligible for the contest.
  • By entering this competition, you 1. Warrant that the work is your original work. 2. To the best of your knowledge, it is not, and has not been in production or otherwise previously published or exhibited. 3. Neither the work nor its use infringes the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trade mark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.
  • Acknowledge that you are solely responsible for the protection of any intellectual property rights you may have in the work.
  • All 3D Printing Competition entries (including descriptions, designs and/or images) submitted to 3D Printing Competition will remain property of the designer, however, the ownership of all 3D printed parts is solely for Texas A&M University at Qatar, will remain within the premises, and will be used for promotional purposes.
  • Applicants are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs. The applicant’s participation shall not constitute employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.
  • Texas A&M University at Qatar will use the personal data you submit in connection with the competition for the purpose of administering the competition and evaluating the work.
  • By entering this competition you authorize Texas A&M University at Qatar to use your name and to exhibit the work publicly, all for the purpose of this competition, and accept that Texas A&M University at Qatar and the competition organizers are not responsible for any damages which you may suffer or claim to suffer by or as a result of taking part in this competition, the authorized use of your entry and/or any decision by the jury.
 
4. Competition Guidelines
 
The competition will have three phases: a proposal selection phase, a project development phase and an evaluation and award phase. An award ceremony to recognize the winners will be organized at TBD.
 
4.1. Selection Phase
 
The participants are kindly requested to submit their proposals before February 7th, 2014. The selection committee will select ten project proposals to be developed and inform the selected participants by February 14th, 2014.
The main evaluation criteria for project proposals will be:
  • The ability of the proposal to lead to a long-term project
  • The extent of innovation and creativity in the proposed printed part, or the novelty of the proposed printed part
  • A clear and realistic definition of the project’s scope (timeline and resources)
  • The proposal’s potential benefit for ongoing Education City research/academic activities
  • The extent of student involvement
  • The technical feasibility of the proposed printed part given existing resources
 
4.2. Development Period
 
The development phase for the ten selected proposals will last for 9 weeks, from February 16th to April 18th, 2013. The developments phase ends by submitting the final work in STL format (see requirements).
 
4.3. Winners Selection
 
At the end of the development phase, the judging committee will award the two best proposals based on the following criteria:
  • The extent to which the stated project goals were actually achieved
  • Degree of innovation, creativity, and novelty
  • Functionality and Usefulness
  • 3D printability and Aesthetic quality
  • Marketability and Feasibility
  • Quality and clarity of presentation materials.
  • The extent of innovation, creativity, or novelty demonstrated by the visualization
  • The extent of student involvement in the development phase
     
4.4. Awards Ceremony
 
During the awards ceremony the two winners will have to present their work to an open audience, which may also include VIPs from industry and academia. The winning teams will also have to prepare posters to be displayed at the awards ceremony.
 
 
5. Submission Guidelines
 
Participants must fill in the form and return it to the address below, no later than February 7th, 2014.

6. Important Dates

  • Proposal submission deadline: February 7th, 2014
  • Deadline for project completion: April, 18th, 2014

7. Winners

  • The first place was awarded to Dr. Abdulla Al-Ansari from Hamad Medical Corporation and Dr. Jean-Marc Peyrat from Qatar Robotic Surgery Centre at Qatar Science & Technology Park for their project “Personalized 3D Print of Kidney and Tumor for Surgical Planning and Training". 

 

  •  The second place was awarded to David Limmer from MaD Aviation LLC for his project  " 3D Printed Compressor Wheel for a Proof-of-Concept 120hp Turboprop Engine for Light Aircraft ".

 

  • The third place was awarded to Dr. Mohammad AL Atteq Al Dosari and Dr. Talal Ibrahim  from Hamad Medical Corporation and Dr. Nikhil V. Navkar from Qatar Robotic Surgery Centre at Qatar Science & Technology Park for their project “Patient Specific 3D Printed Models for Complex Orthopedic Surgical Planning."
