Foreign Language Requirement

As per the Texas A&M University Undergraduate Catalog, “International students whose native language is not English are exempt from satisfying the university foreign language requirement.” For students who do not meet the foreign language requirement but choose to claim this exemption (in lieu of completing two semesters of a foreign language at the university level), Texas A&M University at Qatar will verify this competency through one of the following verifications:

  1. The student can complete two semesters of college-level foreign language credit at an accredited institution (ex. cross-registration in Education City, Texas A&M University, community college, etc.). All arrangements shall be made and fees paid by the student.
  2. The student can complete a credit-by-examination (or placement exam) from Texas A&M University’s Department of International Studies in College Station. The student must place beyond or receive credit for two semesters of the foreign language. All arrangements shall be made and fees paid by the student.
  3. In cases where the student wishes to demonstrate proficiency in a language not taught at Texas A&M (and for which a proficiency/placement exam is not readily available), ASO will identify a TAMUQ or TAMU faculty or staff member with the same native language to validate the proficiency.
