Fundamentals of Engineering Exam Preparation
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) throughout the year. NCEES policy allows an examinee to take the FE exam once during a two-month window, and no more than three times during a twelve-month period.
Why should the FE Exam be taken?
- The first step in obtaining licensure as a professional engineer
- The right to publicly present yourself as an engineer
- An opportunity to work as a consultant
- Recognition that you have the necessary academic and professional experience to practice in the engineering profession
- Added value in the job market
Who can take the FE exam?
The FE exam is a computer-based exam with supplied reference information consisting of a morning session and an afternoon session. The examination is discipline specific. The FE exam is held at a Pearson VUE testing center. NCEES policy allows examinees to take the FE exam once during any two-month testing window, and no more than three times in a twelve-month period.
The following individuals are eligible to take the FE exam:

Preparing for the FE exam
The Civil Engineering Department at Texas A&M maintains a website that is very helpful in preparing for the FE Exam. It includes links to: streaming video review materials, information on videotaped review sessions, a listserv for students interested in registration and a reference manual.
Texas A&M at Qatar requires examinees to submit an application prior to registering with NCEES and scheduling an exam.
Examinees will be provided one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in a 12-month approval period, beginning with the examinee’s first attempt. Examinees who require more than three attempts or allow their 12-month approval period to expire must contact the board directly to obtain additional approvals.
Exam results for the computer-based FE exams are typically available within 7–10 business days.
Examinees will receive an email notification from NCEES with instructions to view their results in their MyNCEES account.
All results are reported as pass or fail. If you fail the examination, you will receive a diagnostic report showing your performance for each of the major topics covered on the exam.
NCEES results are shared with Texas A&M University at Qatar and regulations allow that information may be used for the purpose of inclusion in summary institutional information reporting and research studies.
