The faculty resource allocation (FRA) supports the instructional and scholarly activities of faculty members at Texas A&M at Qatar. Each Academic Leader will determine the methodology for allocating FRA funds to individual faculty in the department. The FRA can be used for travel and/or purchasing items based on the rules, procedures and limits per guidelines. 

Faculty members must contribute in the areas of teaching, research and service. New faculty members hired at Texas A&M at Qatar come from diverse backgrounds and may require startup funds to assist them in establishing their research programs at Texas A&M at Qatar. Offering of startup funds to any faculty members must adhere  to all pertinent A&M System and university policies and procedures found in the Faculty Affairs Faculty Hiring Procedures. 

The Office of the Dean sponsors seminars and workshops throughout the academic year that provide professional development and growth opportunities for faculty. Additionally, the academic programs sponsor invited speakers on topics of interest throughout the academic year. These programs are announced via broadcast email and are posted on our intranet. Also, programs of interest that are sponsored by the Office of Faculty Affairs and Associate Provost on the main campus and through the Center for Teaching Excellence are transmitted via TTVN for viewing in Qatar. Faculty members are invited to participate in all of these programs, and to recommend speakers who may be of interest to the Texas A&M at Qatar academic and research community. 

Awards for faculty that recognize exceptional performance in teaching, scholarly creativity and research, and professional service are awarded at Texas A&M at Qatar. Faculty members can learn of the guidelines and nominations procedures through official communications, from Academic Leaders, from the Office of Academic Affairs, or the Office of Research. The award nomination periods and selection guidelines are announced by email as the time approaches. In general, Texas A&M at Qatar and Texas A&M offers faculty awards in categories that include teaching, research, scholarly accomplishments and professional service. 

Additionally, faculty at Texas A&M at Qatar are eligible for some of the awards sponsored by the main campus. Examples are listed on the Faculty Affairs website. These awards are also announced by email as appropriate. 

The program seeks to facilitate the development of mentoring relationships between assistant professors and senior faculty, and more generally to create a “culture of mentorship” at every level of Texas A&M at Qatar. The work of research, teaching and service remains that of the assistant professors to accomplish in order to be promoted.

The Faculty Mentoring Program, however, seeks to provide a framework that helps assistant professors to receive the information and support to reduce the uncertainties of the promotion process, and to maximize their ability to navigate the promotion process successfully. At minimum, all assistant professors should identify mentors in their first three years.

Faculty at Texas A&M University Qatar Campus (TAMUQ) are of two types: instructional track and research track. This position is a research-track position at the assistant level. The official title for this position is Research Assistant Professor, with the working title of Engineering Assistant Professor. Research-track faculty at TAMUQ are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and develop an independent research program, as well as to engage through scholarship within the university and their discipline.

This non-tenure track position assumes a 9-month academic appointment with an anticipated start date of Spring 2024 or Fall 2024, depending on the applicant's availability. The hired faculty member is eligible to receive a startup package that covers the summer salary for three years. Following this period, faculty members at Texas A&M at Qatar have a 9-month appointment and may cover the salary of the remaining months from externally funded grants and/or teaching and services.

The Mechanical Engineering Program at Texas A&M University at Qatar currently has 10 faculty members who have a strong commitment to teaching, research and service. The program benefits from state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation supporting its key educational and research missions. There is support in Qatar for research from Qatar National Research Fund and industry. Faculty members may advise graduate students enrolled in degree programs at Texas A&M University's flagship campus in the United States.

Texas A&M University at Qatar's Mechanical Engineering Program has recently launched a high-impact research initiative that centers on smart and sustainable manufacturing. With the aim of transforming the manufacturing industry towards sustainability and digitization, the initiative brings together faculty from the main campus at College Station, Texas, and those based in Qatar to collaborate on groundbreaking research.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. The candidate should have a demonstrated scholarly record in the area of robotics and smart systems with a relevant Ph.D. dissertation and publications in reputable journals. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence, developing a viable research program, and service at the professional and institutional levels.

This position assumes a 9-month full-time academic appointment with an anticipated start date of Fall 2023, renewable on a yearly basis. The normal teaching load is three courses during each of the fall and spring semesters (3-3). In addition, TAMUQ typically also offers summer appointments opportunities, and regular availability for teaching in the summer term is highly desirable. The successful candidate will also share the Division of Arts and Sciences’ commitment to teaching excellence and take part in the shared governance of its teaching and service missions.

This position is in Qatar, a Gulf State in the Middle East, and the successful candidate must relocate to Doha, the capital of Qatar. 

Texas A&M University at Qatar is a partnership with the Qatar Foundation and is based in a state-of-the-art 595,000 square foot building that was completed in 2007. The Division of Arts and Sciences teaches courses in physics and other disciplines for TAMUQ's engineering students. 

Qualifications

A doctorate in Physics by the time of appointment is required. Applications are welcome from candidates from any subfield in Physics with an excellent teaching track record or high potential to become excellent undergraduate instructors. 

Demonstrated success in or preparation for meeting the needs of diverse, international student populations is highly desirable.

Prior experience in or familiarity with the U.S. higher education system is also welcome.
